Wellbeing Practice provides a positive, safe and supportive environment. Completely non-intrusive with no drugs, we work with you to identify the underlying issues that cause your depression. We put you in control, helping you to understand yourself, giving you the strength and confidence to achieve clear emotional control to help lift away depression and develop the resilience to face the future.
In its mildest form, depression can mean just being in low spirits. It doesn’t stop you leading your normal life, but makes everything harder to do and seem less worthwhile.
At its most severe, major depression (clinical depression) can be life-threatening, because it can make you feel suicidal or simply give up the will to live.
Depression should always in the first instance be diagnosed and treatment prescribed by your Medical Practitioner; The support and therapy we provide is aimed at helping you again control and practical ways to support your journey towards recovery.
We often use the example ‘I feel depressed’ when we’re feeling sad or unhappy about life. Usually, these feelings slip away in due course.
But, if the feelings are interfering with your life and don’t go away after a couple of weeks, or if they come back, regularly, for a few days at a time, it could be a sign that you’re depressed in the medical sense of the term.
What causes depression?
Depression very much differs from person to person and can happen for one or more causes; at times it may appear for no recognisable reason.
Life events: the first time someone becomes depressed, it is likely to have been caused by an unwelcome or traumatic event, such as being sacked, divorced, or another physical or emotional ordeal.
Loss: frequently actions or experiences that cause depression can also be seen as a loss of some kind, a major life change, or simply moving from one phase of life into another, or a major realisation within your life. It’s not just the harmful experience that causes the depression, but how we think about it.
Anger: depression for some has been described as ‘frozen anger’, an event which left you feeling angry and helpless, if left unprocessed these feelings are internalised to then be expressed as depression.
Childhood experiences: distressing events, mistreatment physically or emotionally, not encouraged with learning good coping skills, these can leave you less able to cope with difficulties in adulthood.
Physical conditions: may cause depression, but are sometimes overlooked because of the focus on their physical symptoms.
Medication: if depression is listed among the side effects or you think a drug is causing your depression, you should mention this to your doctor and see if there is an alternative you could take, especially if you are expecting the treatment to last some time.
Diet: Poor diet and general lack of fitness can both contribute to depression. Evidence suggests that occasionally people become very depressed in response to some specific foods.
Genetics: there are no specific genes for depression identified, some of us are more prone to depression than others. Probable cause could be learnt behaviours from our relatives.
Chemical changes in the brain: Some doctors may tell you that you have a ‘chemical imbalance’ and need medication; But evidence for this, is very weak, and if changes to brain chemistry occur, we don’t know whether these are the result of the depression or its cause.
